Title: Solar Butterfly
Category: Solar Kinetic Medium: Bronze, Aluminum
Dimensions: Six-foot aluminum wing span
Work Date: 2006-07
Miami Beach Botanical Garden, Miami Beach, FL
The wings flutter up and down electro-mechanically when the sun shines.
They are treated with an optical hue shifting pigment, enabling their color to subtly fluctuate with changes in position or light.

A 12-volt geared electric motor derives its energy from solar modules located in the surrounding landscape. The motor drives a crank inside the bronze body of the butterfly. Custom-wound springs are used to counter the weight of the aluminum wings. |
